4 Things You Can Do To Improve Your Self-Esteem
When I hear the word self-esteem I often think of Katt Williams’ stand-up comedy show “The Pimp Chronicles.” In the show he impersonates a woman accusing her boyfriend of ruining the way she thinks and feels about herself. As women haven't we all felt that way at some point while dating? However, he states women cannot blame men for ruining their self-esteem because it is supposed to be “esteem of yourself.” That seems to be the "ah-ha" moment that most forget. While I understand how easy it is for men and society to influence the way women think about themselves, we shouldn’t give attention to everything we hear. We need to filter out what we can use to improve ourselves, and what we can leave behind. I've struggled with this very issue, and have recognized the difficulty in trying to tune out the opinion of others.
“It took me a long time not to judge myself through someone else’s eyes.”

Overall, your self-esteem should come from within. It should be based upon your own thoughts, opinions and perceptions of yourself. Here are four ways to help you maintain a positive and healthy self-esteem.
Why is it easier to love others more than it is to love yourself? Understand that you too are worthy of love. You deserve to know what true love feels like. Once you understand how to love yourself, you'll be able to better set boundaries and protect your well-being. Remember to take care of yourself and never feel ashamed when you place your own needs above others. Self-care includes getting adequate rest, ensuring your health is in check, eating right, and listening to your body when it speaks.
2. Create/Use Positive Affirmations
It is important to speak highly of yourself and find the good in all aspects of your life. The more positivity you speak over your life, the better you'll begin to feel about who you are. Affirmations are meant to be repeated as often as necessary until you begin to believe and adapt to them. You can create your own affirmations to say at least once a day, or anytime you don't feel well. Once you’ve completed your list, focus and meditate on them. Here's a few to get you started. Try filling in the blank to make the affirmation statements personalized towards yourself.
o I am good at…
o One thing I love about myself is….
o I look good when…
o I am most happy when….
o I like the way I feel about myself when I…
3. Maintain Positive Vibes
I suggest taking a moment to examine the energy you give off. This will allow you to be self-aware and in tune with yourself. Think positive about yourself, your circumstances, and future endeavors. Positive thinking will put you on the path to feeling immense joy and peace. Take advantage of the time you have to yourself by relaxing and gathering your thoughts. You can use this time to meditate, or speak to your higher being.
4. Don’t Compare Yourself to Others
Comparing yourself to others can be detrimental by causing you to doubt yourself as well as decrease the confidence you hold in your abilities. To name a few, your accomplishments, physical appearance, personality, and career choice should not be compared to anyone else’s. It is important to realize and accept you are your own person on your own path. You were made this way for a reason. Realizing this will help you to be truly happy in your own skin.
